Alumni News Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Donald Bradley '68 and Tina Combs '88 to the UC Hastings board of directors. He also reappointed Maureen Corcoran '79, who served on the board from 1993 to 2005. Harry Freitas '90 was appointed a judge in the District Family Court of the Big Island of Hawaii. Two Hastings alumni in California were recently appointed Superior Court judges: Jaime Roman '76 in Sacramento County and Rhonda Burgess '82 in Alameda County. More than 60 percent of third-year students contributed to the Class of 2007 Campaign. Matching dollars were offered by generous Hastings alumni Chip Robertson '98, Elaine Bayus '77, Buzz Blackett '77, Jonathan Novak '79, and Betty Falk '46. The Queen's Bench Bar Association elected Felicia Vallera '98 president for 2007. Hastings students Amy Barsky '09 and Raegan Joern '09 were among 50 first-year law students to receive Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal awards for public service summer work. Hastings students Raegan Joern '09, Matthew Melamed '08, and Abigail Sullivan '09 received special scholarships from the California Bar Foundation. Mark Talamantes '95, Virginia Villegas '95, and Karen Carrera '92 received Unity Awards from the San Francisco Minority Bar Coalition and the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association. Frank Busch III '00 made the list of October Research Corporation's Top 40 Under 40. Scotty Sells '72 is adviser to the Ministry of Defense general counsel in Iraq. Previously, he was adviser and mentor to the deputy minister for legal affairs in Afghanistan. The California Senate Rules Committee unanimously confirmed Bruce Varner '62 to the University of California Board of Regents. Barbara Rosenfeld '76 interviewed former Motion Picture Association of America President Jack Valenti in an article published by Los Angeles Lawyer. Beginning this fall, Meetali Jain '00 will be practitioner-in-residence at American University Washington College of Law, teaching and supervising students in the Human Rights Clinic. Faculty News The U.S. Supreme Court cited two Hastings professors in a May 21 ruling in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly. The opinion relies on Professor Geoffrey Hazard's 1998 article, "From Whom No Secrets are Hid," published in Texas Law Review and Professor Richard Marcus's 1986 article, "The Revival of Fact Pleading Under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure," published in Columbia Law Review.
Le Bon Elévè: le Mali et Nous (Shining Democracy: Mali and Us), a film co-written by Professor Ugo Mattei will be screened at the S.F. Frozen Film Festival on July 13. Connecticut Law Review has published "Domain Names, Trademarks and the First Amendment: Searching for Meaningful Boundaries," by Professor Margreth Barrett. Professor Rory Little spoke on "Lawyers Using Deception" at the California State Bar Ethics Symposium. Professor William Dodge was quoted in the New York Times article, "Class-Action Firms Extend Reach to Global Rights Cases." Professor George Bisharat's article, "For Palestinians, Memory Matters," was published in the San Francisco Chronicle and Palestine Chronicle; his article, "Solution on Which All Agree Impossible to Achieve," was published in the San Francisco Chronicle. A National Law Journal article, "Yours, Mine and Ours," quotes Distinguished Professor John Leshy about an environmental bill in Congress. "The Test That Ate Everything: Intermediate Scrutiny in First Amendment Jurisprudence" by Professor Ash Bhagwat was published in the Illinois Law Review. Adjunct Professor Yolanda Jackson is the new diversity director at the Bar Association of San Francisco.
