Among more than 65 law schools, Hastings had the third largest number of alumni on the list. Hastings alumni also made "The East Bay's Best Lawyers in America" list, which included Robert Anderson '51, Lorin Blum '62, Nelson Barry, Sr. '52, David Borgen '81, Richard Carlson '66, Mark Gearheart '80, Clement Glynn '73, Roger Hughes '72, David McClain '72, William Quinby '67, Bruce Reeves '74, Geoffrey Robinson '83, Gary Rosenberg '77, Lori Schweitzer '82, Brad Seligman '78, Gerald Sterns '59, Michael Verna '78, and Randall Wulff '74. John Liebert '66 was named a Southern California SuperLawyer for his work in employment and labor law, and Marilyn Raia '76 was recognized in the field of maritime law in the 2007 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Filipino-American Eduardo Angeles '90 was selected to be the first-ever special counsel to the Los Angeles City Council. Sandra Thompson '02 now serves on the board of directors of The Peninsula Open Space Trust. Timothy Alan Simon '82 was appointed to the Public Utilities Commission by California Governor Schwarzenegger. The plaintiffs' team in the infamous Wal-Mart gender discrimination case includes three Hastings alumni: Steve Stemerman '75, Elizabeth Lawrence '83, and Brad Seligman '78. The case is the largest employment class action ever certified. Guy Rounsaville '68 has joined LaSalle Bank in Chicago as executive vice president and general counsel for the North America region. Formerly with VISA International, Rounsaville was the Hastings Alumnus of the Year in 2006. Recognized for his pioneering work in launching the DVD format and for setting specifications for the Blu Ray disc format, Benjamin Feingold '82 recently became a member of the board of directors of PlayPhone. Most recently, he was president of a division of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Ruth Glick '91, a former Hastings adjunct professor of arbitration law, has been elected president of the Mediation Society of San Francisco. Stephen Knight '96, deputy director of Hastings' Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, was recently quoted in a New York Times Magazine article, "Asylum for the World's Battered Women." Two Hastings alumni are serving in the Office of the Mayor in San Francisco–Phil Ginsburg '93 as chief of staff and Nate Ballard '99 as press secretary. Elisabeth Hyde '79 is the author of four novels, and her latest, The Abortionist's Daughter, will be translated into seven languages. Guy O. Kornblum '66 wrote Volume 1, Reaching the Settlement, of the two-volume title, Negotiating and Settling Tort Cases (Thomas West and American Association of Justice). Garrett Sutton '78 coauthored Real Estate Advantages: Tax and Legal Secrets of Successful Real Estate Investors (Warner Business Books). Professor Donna Ryu presented oral arguments before the California Supreme Court in Murphy v. Kenneth Cole Productions, a case that began in the Hastings Civil Justice Clinic and grew from a superior court trial conducted by Hastings students. The case presents two cutting-edge issues in California wage and hour law.
Dean Nell Jessup Newton '76 is pleased to announce that Joan C. Williams will be the first holder of the newly created 1066 Foundation Chair. Professor Williams, who came to Hastings in 2005, is a nationally recognized expert on work-life issues and was most recently honored by the ABA with the Margaret Brent Award. Professor Evan Lee will hold the Hastings Research Chair for 2007-08 in recognition of his outstanding scholarship and his contract with Oxford University Press for his upcoming book, tentatively titled The Story of Standing: from Progressive Strategy to Conservative Ideology. Professor David Faigman has a contract with Oxford University Press for a book tentatively titled, Our Empirical Constitution: A Unified Theory of Constitutional Facts. An Accidental Alliance: The Secret Diplomacy that Persuaded France to Arm the American Revolution, written by Professor Joel Paul, will be published by Viking Penguin/Riverhead. Professor Paul held the Hastings Research Chair in 2005-2006.
At a recent meeting of Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals judges, Professor Vik Amar spoke on Trends in Ninth Circuit Procedure Cases. Chancellor and Dean Nell Jessup Newton '76 was recently quoted in The New York Times in the article, "A Tribe Dreams of a Casino, and of a Less Spartan Life." Commenting on the Attorney General/U.S. Attorneys issue, Professor Rory Little was quoted in the "Week in Review" section of The New York Times. He also reviewed Scott Sundby's textbook, A Life and Death Decision: A Jury Weighs the Death Penalty, in the article, "The Eyes of the Beholders," published in Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law (2006). Professor Marsha Cohen was interviewed on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" program on March 6. She spoke about the Santa Rosa marijuana case.
