Manuela Albuquerque '75, Nanci Clarence '85, Susan Harriman '83, Lynne Hermle '81, Jennifer Keller '78, Karen Kubin '76, Edith Matthai '75, and Jeannine Yoo Sano '94 made the list of Top Women Litigators published by the Daily Journal on May 10. Hastings ranked number 1 among law schools, with the largest number of graduates on the list.

Lorraine Akiba '81 was recognized by Chambers USA as one of America's leading lawyers for business.

Brad Levin '80 was selected as a 2007 Colorado Super Lawyer by Law & Politics magazine. Levin is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America.

The San Francisco Business Times named three Hastings alumnae among the most influential women in government and nonprofits: Kamala Harris '89, San Francisco district attorney; Sonja Weissman '91, managing partner at Reed Smith; and Maria Ayerdi '93, executive director of Transbay Joint Powers Authority.

Julia Mezhinsky Jayne '99 was selected by the Bar Association of San Francisco to co-chair the new Barristers Club subsection of the Litigation Section.

Bar Association of San Francisco President Nancy Clarence '85 was profiled in the Spring 2007 issue of San Francisco Attorney magazine. The issue also recognized the new association treasurer, Russell Roeca '80.

The Bar Association of San Francisco gave Rebecca Biernat '98 the Legal Services for Children Pro Bono Partner award.

Law & Politics magazine has named Jeffrey Soza '87 one of 50 Southern California Super Lawyers.

Gary Samson '73 was named a 2007 Southern California Super Lawyer in banking by Los Angeles Lawyer magazine.

Timothy Herr '86 has launched the Daily Case Report at www.dailycasereport.com, a website with summaries and analyses of recently decided cases.

Alexandra Ross '98 is associate general counsel of Walmart.com, managing a team of attorneys in the company's Internet division.

Faculty News

Professor Evan Lee is the law school's first associate dean for research. In this new position, he will facilitate and publicize the work of new professors and established Hastings scholars.

Professor Harry Prince will become associate academic dean on July 1, succeeding Bill Dodge, who will return to full-time teaching.

"The Constitution in the Postmodern Age" by Professor Calvin Massey was published in the Washington & Lee Law Review.

Professor Joe Grodin published "Same-Sex Relationships and State Constitutional Analysis" in the Willamette Law Review and "The Story of Pugh v. See's Candies: 'Implied in Fact' Promises in Employment Contracts" in the book, Employment Law Stories.

The Virginia Journal of Social Policy published Karen Musalo 's article "Protecting Victims of Gendered Persecution: Fear of Floodgates or Call to (Principled) Action?"

Adjunct Professor Jeffrey Goldfien coauthored "What if Lawyers Have their Way? An Empirical Assessment of Conflict Strategies and Attitudes toward Median Styles," published in the Ohio State Journal of Dispute Resolution. He also wrote, "Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor: RLUIPA and the Mediation of Religious Land Use Disputes," published in the Journal of Dispute Resolution.

"Maximizing Rights: the One State Solution to the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict" was the title of Professor George Bisharat's talk at the University of Washington's Center for Middle East Studies.

Class of 2007 Campaign
Almost 60 percent of third-year students contributed a gift to the Class of 2007 Campaign. Matching dollars were offered by generous Hastings alumni Chip Robertson '98, Elaine Bayus '77, Buzz Blackett '77, and Jonathan Novak '79. Read more.

Help the Hastings Student Negotiation Team!
Volunteers are needed to coach students during practice sessions on September 5, 13, 19, and 25. In addition, judges are needed on October 6 for a qualifying event in San Francisco. To volunteer, email Jolynn Jones or call her at 415.581.8941.

1066 Foundation Board of Trustees Nominations
The 1066 Foundation Board of Trustees is seeking dedicated alumni to serve as ambassadors for the law school and participate actively in fundraising. Academic Programs

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals gave Hastings the 2007 Ninth Circuit ADR Education Award. Chris Knowlton leads the Hastings ADR program and is the director of the Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution.

Student John Dermody '07 received a prestigious 2007-08 Fulbright Grant to conduct research at the Special Court in Sierra Leone for his project, "Post-Conflict Rule of Law Development in Sierra Leone."

Four Hastings students - John Dermody '07, Travis Hodgkins '08, Wendy Jackson '08, and Nema Milaninia '07 - created the online Transnational Law Blog to discuss serious transnational law issues.

Professors Evan Lee, Melissa Nelken, H.G. Prince, and Keith Wingate, along with Jan Jemison '86, have developed the Hastings Outreach Program to provide academic and life skills instruction to students from disadvantaged San Francisco high schools.  

Professor Joel Paul has been appointed director of international programs, succeeding Professor Dan Lathrope.

The Hastings Mediation Team, coached by Clint Waasted '04, took first place at the ABA National Representation in Mediation Competition in Atlanta.

Michael Salerno, associate director of the Center for State and Local Government Law, has been appointed executive director of the California Fair Political Practices Commission.
