Carol Mon Lee '74 received the Hawaii Women Lawyers Distinguished Service Award.

Larry Sage '75 is judicial advisor to the attorney general in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Shelley Thompson '76 is a vice chairman of Bank of Hawaii. She is in charge of the investment services group, which includes personal trusts, institutional and personal investment management, retirement plan services, private banking, brokerage, and foundation services.

Santa Clara County Counsel Ann Ravel '74 was named Public Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of California's public law section.

The Daily Journal's list of the Top 100 California Leading Lawyers includes Joseph Cotchett '64, Nanci Clarence '85, Scott Drexel '75, Jennifer Keller '78, Jerome Levine '65, Thomas Malcolm '66, and Brad Seligman '78.

Governor Schwarzenegger appointed Madera lawyer Mitchell Rigby '77 a judge in Madera County Superior Court.

The Washington State Bar Association has given Ronald Ward '76 the Excellence in Diversity Award.

The new Hawaii Scholarship Committee is creating an endowed scholarship to send a student from Hawaii to Hastings. Committee members are Lorraine Akiba '81 , Dennis Chong Kee '91, George Hetherington '78, Christopher Lau '76, Jeffrey Lau '77, Harvey Lung '81, Coralie Matayoshi '81, Jerold Matayoshi '80, Crystal Rose '82, Gerald Sekiya '68, Jeffrey Taylor '74, Michael Tom '75, Alfred Wong '64, Danton Wong '82, and Richard Yanagi '85.

Anthony Label '99 is a member of the board of directors for the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association.

Jean-Pierre Francillette '97 is the new president of the Wiley Manuel Bar Association in Sacramento and a member of the Anthony Kennedy Inn of Court.

Annabelle Cortez-Gonzalves '95 received the Hon. Benjamin Aranda III Outstanding Public Service Award for her work with the Immigration Legal Assistance Project.

Tim Hsieh '07 was one of two grand prize winners of Foley & Lardner's Intellectual Property Writing Competition. His winning article was, "The Adequacy of the Mark: Raising the Standard Under 35 U.S.C. 287(a) for Patented On-line Software Methods."

Ken Matejka '88 co-founded LegalPPC, a San Francisco-based marketing company that helps solo practitioners acquire clients from the Google search engine.

Doug Axel '94 is the new chief of the major frauds section for the U.S. Attorney, Central District of California.

As honorary cochairs, Betsy McDaniel '84 and Andrew Giacomini '91 helped raised funds for the Bar Association of San Francisco's 2007 Food from the Bar.

Elizabeth McDaniel '84, Larry Nagin '65, Robert Sall '78, Rick Seabolt '75, Glenn Von Tersch '98, Eric Wersching '03, Peter Wong '93, and Armando Zambrano '02 were appointed to the Hastings 1066 Foundation board of trustees.

New members of the Hastings Alumni Board of Governors are Thomas Brackey '92, Joy Chang '05, Kristin Cornuelle '06, Kate Cutler '98, Rick Fischer '70, Dennis Ghan '77, Coralie Matayoshi '81, Philip Matthews '77, Jay Monahan '87, Marc Morley '00, Paul Salvaty '93, and Griff Towle '89.

Gail Flesher '88 was named one of the Top 50 Female New York Super Lawyers. Paula Meyer '83 and John Stephens '78 are listed as Southern California Super Lawyers. Northern California Super Lawyers include Jeff Ebstein '83,Christopher Ellison '77, Betsy England '78, Dana Fox '85, Howard Lind '78, Michael Loeb '74, Christine Noma '82, Scott Righthand '79, James N. Eva Guo '94 recently published Ramblings, a book of poetry.

Faculty News

Professor Leo Martinez '78 was unanimously nominated to serve a three-year term on the executive committee of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). The executive committee is the governing board of the AALS and oversees member law schools.

Professor David Faigman has been appointed the John Digardi Distinguished Professor of Law by the Hastings board of directors. The Hastings Rutter committee has given Professor Lois Weithorn the Hastings Rutter Award for Teaching Excellence.

Professor Radhika Rao presented a paper on human embryonic stem cell research at the Law & Society conference in Berlin, Germany. Her essay, "Genes and Spleens: Property, Contract, or Privacy Rights in the Human Body?" appeared in the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics.

Professor Frederick Lambert was appointed to the National Academic Advisory Board of the William Rehnquist Center on the Constitutional Structures of Government.

Dean Nell Newton '76 was interviewed for newspaper articles about Erwin Chemerinsky, the recently-appointed dean of the Donald Bren School of Law at UC Irvine.

Oxford University Press will publish Professor Robin Feldman's forthcoming book, The Role of Science in the Law.

Associate Professor Ethan Leib published "Friends and the Law: Can Public Policy Support the Institution of Friendship?" in Policy Review and "Criminal Justice and the Challenge of Family Ties" in the University of Illinois Law Review. He has been named an affiliated faculty member at the Kadish Center for Morality, Law & Public Affairs at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall.

Distinguished Professor John Leshy testified before U.S. House and Senate committees, which are considering reforms to the Mining Law of 1872.

The article, "Fiction, Form, and Substance in Subchapter K: Taxing Partnership Mergers, Divisions, and Incorporations" by Professor Heather Field, was reprinted in the San Diego Law Review.

"A 'Social Dimension' in European Private Law?" coauthored by Professor Ugo Mattei, was published in the New England Law Review.

Professor Dan Lathrop spoke recently to the San Francisco Tax Club on the recurring question, "Is it Time for an Alternative to the Alternative Minimum Tax?"

Visiting Professor Beth Hillman addressed the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C., speaking about the persistence of racial injustice at court-martials.

Hastings clinical faculty members Donna Ryu, Miye Goishi, and Nancy Stuart contributed to the fourth edition of the treatise on employment discrimination law by Lindemann and Grossman.

You can complete a California legislative history from your office. The Hastings Library's seven-step guide to compiling a California legislative history directs you to links for legislative documents. The library also has a step-by-step guide to compiling a federal legislative history.
