Doug Shorenstein '79, chair and CEO of Shorenstein Properties, was appointed to the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

Vernon Winters '87, a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, co-authored Modern Patent Litigation: Strategies for Turning Losing Cases into Winning Ones.

Thomas Humphreys '77, a partner at Morrison & Foerster in New York, published Limited Liability Companies and Limited Liability Partnerships.

The Syracuse University 2007 Women's Leadership Award was given to Nola Miyasaki '84, executive director of the university's Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship.

The ABA International Law News published an article by Constance Kim '03 on the New Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. Kim was elected secretary of the International Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. In that role, she was part of a six-attorney delegation to Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Steven Choi '83 recently launched http://lawlink.com/, an online business networking website exclusively for attorneys.

Michael Lucey '81 was elected secretary treasurer for the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. He will serve as vice president in 2009 and president in 2010.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed former prosecutor Mark Boessenecker '86 Napa County Superior Court judge.

Law and Politics listed 19 Hastings alumni among the top 100 Northern California Super Lawyers: Deborah Ballati '75, James Bennett '75, James Bostwick '68, George Corey '63, Michael Desmarais '73, Kathryn Dickson '76, Roger Dreyer '80, John Hartog '79, Lynne Hermle '81, Jill Hersh '77, John McCall '68, Edward Nevin Jr. '67, Betty Orvell '86, Susan Popik '75, Ronald Rouda '59, Brad Seligman '78, Bruce Simon '80, William Smith '73, and Claude Stern '80. Three alumni – Nancy Clarence '85, Joseph Cotchett '64, and Michael Kelly '76 – appeared in the Top 10. Other Northern California Super Lawyers included Susan Kaye '88 and KC Ward '74.

Family law attorney Ann Ameral '80 is a Stanislaus County Superior Court commissioner.

Hal Small '70 was named a Southern California Super Lawyer. Earlier this year, he was recognized in San Diego Magazine as one of the best in client satisfaction wealth managers.

Walt Swanson '64 was re-elected judge advocate of the Department of California Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The Recorder highlighted Howard Lind '78 for his practice in real estate transactions and Betty Orvell '86 for her trusts and estates work.

As honorary cochair for the Bar Association of San Francisco's 2007 Food from the Bar, Andrew Giacomini '91 helped raised more than $270,000.

Dan Beebe '82 was named the Big 12 commissioner in September; he was the Big 12's CEO from 2003 to mid-2007.

Mika Hilaire '00 was named a rising star in Southern California Super Lawyer.

Steven Patti '92, a partner at Clapper, Patti, Schweizer & Mason, was lead attorney in an asbestos case that settled for more than $1 million.

F. Lane Finch Jr. '87 was named the 2007 Birmingham Business Journal's Best of the Bar in workers compensation law.

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris '89 was elected vice president of the National District Attorney's Association.

Howard Watkins '72 is donating his more than 150,000 photographs to California State University, Fresno.

John F. Digardi Distinguished Professor of Law Mary Kay Kane authored the third edition of Wright, Miller, and Kane 's Federal Practice & Procedure.

The article "Dire Conscientious Objection as a Basis for Refugee Status:   Protection for the Fundamental Right of Freedom of Thought, Conscience and Religion," by Karen Musalo, director of the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, was published in Refugee Survey Quarterly, a United Nations publication.

University of Miami Law Review published Professor Jeff Lefstin 's article, "Claim Construction, Appeal, and the Predictability of Interpretive Regimes."

According to a NY Times Magazine article, Distinguished Professor Joan Williams, Director of the Center for WorkLife Law, has "something approaching rock-star status among the small but growing network of lawyers and scholars who litigate or study family-responsibility discrimination cases."

Professor Geoffrey Hazard was appointed senior adviser in ethics to the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association.

Professor Frederick Lambert published "Commentary on the ABN-AMRO Decision of the Dutch Enterprise Court and Comparison to Delaware Law" in the European Company Law Journal.

Professor Clark Freshman trained TSA inspectors in August in a series of six two-day seminars on lie detection.
