Submissions

The Hastings Law Journal gladly considers unsolicited manuscripts by members of the legal community. HLJ is currently accepting submissions, and will begin reviewing them for publication at the end of February. We strongly prefer submissions on-line via the online submissions service ExpressO. We also accept submissions via e-mail and regular mail.

HLJ also welcomes both formal and informal responses to articles appearing in the HLJ and will consider such responses for publication.

Requirements

Submissions should be double-spaced, typewritten, with citations in either footnote or endnote style. We prefer articles that are under 30,000 words, including text and footnotes.

Citations should conform to The Bluebook (19th ed. 2010).

All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter and a brief abstract. All necessary contact information should also be included.

Electronic Submissions

The Hastings Law Journal is pleased to accept submissions electronically. ExpressO

Articles may be transmitted through ExpressO, or directly to the Journal at hlj@hastingslawjournal.org.

Paper Submissions

Paper submissions should be directed to the following:

Hastings Law Journal
UC Hastings College of the Law
200 McAllister Street
San Francisco, California 94102-4707

HLJ regrets that it can only return those manuscripts for which the author provides a pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope.

Expedited Review

In the event an author is presented with a deadline from another publication, we will make every effort to expedite review of their work. Unfortunately, we will only be able to expedite review during the school year (mid-August through mid-May).

To request an expedited review, please send an e-mail to hlj@hastingslawjournal.org. Expedite requests should include the author’s name, the title of the article, the name(s) of the offering journal(s), and the deadline date.

Voir Dire Submissions

To encourage greater dialogue on topics of interest, HLJ is now accepting submissions for Voir Dire. This online extension of the Journal will feature responses to our print articles. Submissions should be 3,000 words or fewer, lightly footnoted in comparison to traditional Articles, and citations should conform to the 19th Edition of the Bluebook.

Please send Voir Dire submissions in Microsoft Word format to hljvoirdire@hastingslawjournal.org.

Responses will be posted on a rolling basis and will be permanently published on this site in PDF format.
