We can’t wait to welcome you to UC Hastings College of the Law! We know you might have a lot of questions about the law school experience, and Orientation is a great way to begin acclimating to and understanding your new community. The initial three days of Orientation are mandatory for all first year JD students, and will be your first introduction to the classmates, faculty, and staff members that you will be spending the next three years with. We will also provide you with some substantive academic training to help better prepare you for the start of classes and the academic program at UC Hastings. The last two days of Orientation will be a chance for you to further explore the campus and community at UC Hastings and the San Francisco Bay Area in general. The events on these days are not all mandatory and are instead designed for you to “choose your own adventure” by creating an itinerary that best meets your individual interests and needs.
JD Orientation will take place on Monday, August 15 – Friday, August 19. All events on August 15 – 17 are mandatory for incoming JD students. You can choose how many, and which, events you would like to attend on August 18 and 19 (subject to capacity limits).
Transfer Orientation will take place on Tuesday, August 16, and is mandatory for all Transfer students. You will also be able to choose to attend events on August 18 and 19 that interest you (subject to capacity limits).
Registration for JD’s will occur between 9:00 and 9:45 am on Monday, August 15. When you check in, you will be given your schedule for the week, a map of the campus, and some necessary information from the Office of Student Services. You will also receive a lanyard and name badge. We ask that you keep your badge on during all Orientation events to better help your classmates and the rest of the UC Hastings community get to know you. You must check in during registration to attend Orientation.
We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes and layers on each day (which is good dressing advice for San Francisco in general!).
The first day of Orientation is “Spirit Day,” and would be a great time for you to wear the UC Hastings t-shirts you will be mailed this summer by the Admissions Office, or any other clothing that shows your school spirit, such as blue and gold.
On Wednesday, a sitting judge will administer the professionalism pledge to your class. This is also the day you will be mingling with some of our illustrious alums and local legal professionals at the Alumni Mixer. We suggest that you wear business casual attire for this day.
Lastly, we will be providing you with the opportunity to take a free professional headshot on Thursday, so please feel free to wear or bring business attire if you would like for your photograph. There are locker rooms in the gymnasium where you can change if needed.
You can order your books after you know what section you are in, and you will be assigned your section by early August. More information will be forthcoming closer to that date.
Our Student Life website will be updated throughout the summer with information about the campus, community, and local resources that you might find helpful.
We also encourage you to get to know your new city more through one of the many websites devoted to SF’s numerous opportunities and attractions. Here are just a few to start you out:
For more detailed information including an enrollment checklist with due dates and deadlines, please make sure you log in to the Admitted Student Portal. The Portal will be updated throughout summer with important information. If you have any questions, please contact the Admissions Office.
The 360 Degree Review is an important professional development tool that will help you assess your strengths and help better assist you in determining things such as what type of law best fits with those natural strengths, as well as related career strategies and goals. The 360 asks you to assess yourself (the self-assessment) and to have two other people assess your strengths as well. We ask that you at least complete the self-assessment portion of the 360 prior to Orientation, and encourage you to ask two other people who know you to do so as well if possible. We will be reviewing these 360’s during one of the Inns of Courts sessions later in your first year so please keep your completed 360 easily accessible by emailing it to yourself or uploading it somewhere safe.
All incoming students are required to complete 4 online forms no later than August 13, the Friday prior to Orientation. These forms contain important information we need to collect such as emergency contact information, disclosures, and directory information, as well as some acknowledgement forms you are required to e-sign such as that you are receiving the Student Handbook. Please fill out the 4 online forms here: kscope.uchastings.edu. You can log in with the same user name and password you use for Web Advisor. Instructions on how to complete the online forms can be found here.
