I write to you today with an update on the Building UC Hastings Campaign and the status of the implementation phase of our Long Range Campus Plan. To date, thanks to our generous UC Hastings community, I am pleased to report that the campaign effort has generated gifts and pledges of $3 million. I would like to give special thanks and recognize Professor Leo Martinez, the Albert Abramson Professor of Law, Capital Campaign Chair, and proud member of the UC Hastings Class of 1978. Leo has worked tirelessly on this effort and has also made his own generous and substantial commitment.
Support of this project is critical and every dollar raised will impact the details and ensure that we create a world class and vibrant campus in the heart of San Francisco. Funding for the base building is both literally and figuratively “foundational,” and your gifts are what will allow us to add enhancements to the basic design and functionality of the 333 Golden Gate Avenue Building, having a lasting impact for generations to come. Chief among these enhancements is the development of an academic quad. This open space, immediately accessible from the Law Café, is to be sited between the new building and Kane Hall. Spanning between McAllister Street and Golden Gate Avenue, this open and inviting plaza space will add a much needed student amenity currently absent from our urban campus whether used for studying, quiet reflection, or social interaction (e.g., Beer on the Quad!). This plaza will integrate greening and sustainability principles while fostering a sense of community and a spirit akin to a more classic campus setting. Above the quad will be a sky bridge connecting the two buildings. In addition to the striking aesthetic this creates, the sky bridge will offer an efficiency of use and ease of travel between Kane and To-Be-Named Halls.

While all of this is underway, UC Hastings is moving forward on its exciting collaboration to develop additional student housing to create a true Academic Village. In June 2016, a predevelopment agreement was entered into with UCSF setting out shared goals, respective roles and responsibilities, and cost sharing to serve as a roadmap for project implementation.
As background, upon completion of the 333 Golden Gate Project, Snodgrass Hall at 198 McAllister Street will be torn down and replaced in collaboration with UCSF to create an additional 525 residential units housing approximately 710 students and faculty. The new shared housing will be accompanied by shared access to facilities such as the library, food service and other campus amenities. The two schools began collaborating in 2008 with the creation of the UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science and Health Policy to create a bridge between the two institutions, founded by Acting Chancellor and Dean David Faigman. Future plans call for the renovation of McAllister Tower, also in collaboration with UCSF. This rehabilitation project will develop 341 residential units, to house approximately 410 students and faculty, up from the 280 residents currently accommodated.
As further background, I’m pleased to share with you that UC Hastings has now been conferred “Good Neighbor” status by the Market Street for the Masses Coalition, a group of leading non-profits that serve the Mid-Market and Tenderloin communities and “envision and push for creative policy change and development without displacement.” This status comes as the result of the college’s longstanding and ongoing involvement of the community in our planning process.
