UC Law SF Teams Power Their Way Through Regional & National Competitions

The UC Law SF competition teams were definitely not short on success this month as the Trial Teams, Moot Court Teams, and Client Counseling Teams all brought home trophies after some great showings at regional and national competitions across the country.

Trial Team Places 2nd at National Competition in New Orleans

After a first place showing last November at the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law 14th Annual Law Student Trial Advocacy Regional Competition in Los Angeles, 3L Pablo Wudka-Robles, and 2Ls Ellie Barczak, Ali Wolf and Kara Goidosik represented UC Law SF at the National Competition in New Orleans on January 27-8. With the support of coaches Lauren Birnbaum’13 and Geoff Hansen, the team battled to a second place finish at the national competition held in the Eastern District of Louisiana Courthouse.

Moot Court Team Wins Best Brief at Competition in New York

2L Catherine Kennedy and 3L Andrea Swanson competed in the 2018 National Immigration Law Competition at New York University Law School on February 2-4. The students placed 3rd and 4th respectively as oralists, and qualified as National Quaterfinalists. The duo most notably took home the Best Brief Award.

Trial Team Wins Regional Title in Sacramento

2Ls Joe Shashaty, Kirche Ray, and Natalie Dreyer attended the 2018 Texas Young Lawyers Association Regional Trial Competition at the Robert Matsui Federal Courthouse in Sacramento on February 8-10. The field consisted of 22 teams facing off for a chance to be declared regional champions and secure a spot in the national competition. The UC Law SF squad won all four of their rounds, including a strong performance against Washington University, a difficult match against Santa Clara University, and a victory over the formidable Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College. After presenting a nearly flawless plaintiff’s case in their final round, the team was victorious in securing the regional championship title and a ticket to Austin for the national competition.

Client Counseling Team Takes 2nd at Sacramento Regionals

2Ls Adrienne Nichelini and Nina Montazeri competed against 11 teams and finished in second place overall at the American Bar Association Client Counseling Team Competition on February 9-10 at McGeorge Law School in Sacramento. The theme of the competition was intentional torts, and if the first place team cannot attend the National Competition in North Carolina, the UC Law SF team will be ready and able to fill in.

Moot Court Team Advances After 2nd Place Finish in San Francisco

2Ls Eisha Perry, Monika Darwish, and Swetha Gopalakrishnan represented UC Law SF at the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition on February 10 at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, James R. Browning Building in San Francisco. The competition case revolved around a trademark infringement dispute between a craft brewery and artisan wine bar, and the team performed admirably to finish second overall. The UC Law SF trio will be one of two teams advancing from regionals to the next stage of competition in Washington, DC on March 17 for a shot at a national title.

Congratulations to all of the UC Law SF teams for their fine showings and expertly representing the law school.
