VA Educational Benefits

GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.

The Office of the Registrar provides veterans and their dependents with the information and assistance required to seamlessly receive veterans’ educational benefits while pursuing their academic careers at UC Hastings. To determine eligibility for benefits, students must apply online on the VA website at www.gibill.va.gov. You must be enrolled for classes at UC Hastings before the Office of the Registrar can certify your enrollment to the VA.

Items Checklist- The following paperwork must be submitted to the appropriate office before the certification process can begin at UC Hastings.

    1. Veteran’s Certification Request form
      (submit to the Office of the Registrar)
    1. Certificate of Eligibility
      (submit to the Office of the Registrar)

      •  For Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment (formerly called Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment) only: Make sure to include your VR&E counselor’s contact information (Full name, phone #, and email address) in the general request form.

UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)
All students are automatically enrolled in and billed for UC SHIP every Fall. If you already have health insurance coverage, and that insurance plan meets the University of California minimum health care criteria, you may request to waive out of UC SHIP by submitting a waiver form online. Students who have successfully waived out of UC SHIP in the past, must re-submit new waivers every Fall.

Residency
Waiver of Non-Resident Fees for Veterans and Military Service Members:

  • A Veteran using Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33), Veteran Readiness & Employment (Chapter 31), or Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty (Chapter 30) benefits who lives in the state in which the institution of higher learning is located (regardless of his/her legal state of residence) and enrolls in the school.
  • Anyone described above while he/she remains continuously enrolled (other than during regularly scheduled breaks between courses, semesters, or terms) at the same school. This person must have enrolled in the school and must be using educational benefits either Post-9/11 GI Bill®(Chapter 33), Veteran Readiness & Employment (Chapter 31), or Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (Chapter 30).

Waiver of Non-Resident Fees for Dependents:

A waiver of non-resident fees may apply to you if you meet any one of the following criteria:

  • An individual using transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits who lives in the state in which the institution of higher learning is located (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school.
    Anyone described above while he/she remains continuously enrolled (other than during regularly scheduled breaks between courses, semesters, or terms) at the same school. This person must have enrolled in the school and must be using educational benefits Post-9/11 GI Bill®.
  • Anyone using transferred Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefits who lives in the state where the higher education institution is located and the transferor is a member of the uniformed service who is serving on active duty.
    Anyone using benefits under the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship who lives in the state where the higher education institution is located (regardless of his/her formal state of residence).

***NOTE***Anytime you change your units, whether it is an increase or decrease in status, it is your responsibility to let the Registrar’s office know. Failure to do so will result in overpayment or underpayment for your benefits. If you promptly notify the school and the VA of these changes, you can prevent or reduce overpayments.
