Summer Legal Institute

Each summer UC Hastings offers classes in a variety of subject areas. All in-person courses are taught at UC Hastings in San Francisco, adjacent to federal, state, and local courthouses, San Francisco City Hall, and many of the city’s leading law firms.
The credit-bearing courses are open to any J.D. student currently enrolled and in good academic standing at an ABA-accredited law school and to UC Hastings JD, LL.M. and MSL students.
VA Students: Pay careful attention to the start and end date for each session (as well as online courses) as this might affect your VA benefits for the summer.
NOTE: The summer schedule and information is subject to change.
Online Course Types (Asynchronous and Online Synchronous)
As part of the College’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, courses are offered as online asynchronous and online synchronous courses. Students can elect to take one of the asynchronous courses in addition to a synchronous course
- Online Asynchronous Courses:
These courses, indicated in WebAdvisor with an “online” location, have no set class date/meeting times and thus offer more flexibility. - Online Synchronous Courses:
These in-residence (on-campus) courses have been converted to meet online on the set days and times indicated in the course schedule.Definition Class Meetings Some Course Examples (not the full list) Course Schedule Location Notation Online Asynchronous Courses No set class date/meeting times.
Students have more flexibility.e.g., Advanced Legal Research, Applied Contracts Online Online Synchronous Courses Classes will be held online (Teams/Zoom)
on the set days and times indicated in the course schedulee.g., Evidence, Remedies, etc. No location indication
(cell will be left blank) - Pandemic Response to Academic Regulation 1204 (Applicable to Current UC Hastings Students Only)
- Academic Regulation 1204 limits total distance education (online) units that can be applied toward the JD degree to 15 units overall and 8 units in any given semester.
- During the 2021 Summer Legal Institute (Session 1, Session 2, and full summer session), we are offering all classes online as pandemic response, to protect the community. But, because we are doing so as part of pandemic response, the units associated with most of those classes do not count toward the Academic Regulation 1204 distance education caps.
- Only asynchronous online courses (i.e., Advanced Legal Research and Applied Contracts) count towards the Academic Regulation 1204 online education unit caps in Summer Legal Institute 2021. No other Summer Legal Institute 2021 credits count toward the Academic Regulation 1204 cap.
- Exams will be take-home and online for courses with exams. The exam schedule is TBA.
