Misinformation, Disinformation, and Responses
March 4 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
We live in an age where misinformation and disinformation are rife. Untrue rumors spread online have dramatic effect on events on the ground, often causing real and widespread harms. Two clear examples are the rumors that the Covid-19 pandemic was a conspiracy, and the rumors about election fraud related to the November 3, 2020 election, rumors that predated the election and led up to the January 6, 2021 insurrection and attack on the Capitol. In this panel, three experts who have been studying online disinformation from very different directions will share their observations about the patterns of disinformation and will discuss potential technology and policy strategies to limit its harms.
- Professor Kate Starbird, University of Washington
- Renée DiResta, Stanford Internet Observatory
- Dr. Brandie M. Nonnecke, Founding Director of the CITRIS Policy Lab at UC Berkeley
