EALS Speaker Series with Dr. Teng Biao – Human Rights and Civil Society in China Under Xi Jinping

Dr. Teng Biao is a legal scholar, lawyer, and human rights activist. He was formerly a professor at the China University of Political Science and Law. Since 2003, Dr. Teng has been a leader in China’s rights defense movement and has advocated for victims of rights violations and for related legal reforms in numerous prominent cases involving religious freedom, freedom of expression, the rights of minority nationalities, and other fundamental human rights. He co-founded the Open Constitution Initiative and is the founder and president of China Against the Death Penalty. After facing a sustained campaign of harassment and repeated detentions in mainland China for his legal work and advocacy, he relocated to the United States in 2014. He has continued his work as a scholar at Harvard, Princeton, NYU, and CUNY.
