Faculty Colloquium presented by Beshara Doumani of Brown University (Open to Faculty Only)

January 29 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Brown University historian Beshara Doumani (https://www.brown.edu/academics/history/people/beshara-doumani) will be our colloquium guest on Tuesday January 29 at noon. His talk is entitled “Between House and Orchard: Family, Shari’a, and the Making of the Modern Middle East.”

Beshara’s pathbreaking research entailed detailed examination of two hundred years of Islamic court records from Tripoli, Lebanon, and Nablus, Palestine, applying techniques of literary criticism to uncover startling revelations about courts as sites for the social construction of gender and family relations. His methodology alone is fascinating, whether or not you have interest in the time and location of his work.

This event is only open to UCH faculty and invited guests.
