Please review Section VII. Credit For Work At Other Schools in the Academic Regulations for more information.
Credits from an ABA Accredited Institution
Hastings students may transfer up to 34 units of credit from courses taken at another law school. (No more than 31 units of first year courses may transfer.) Transfer units do not count toward your GPA and are transferred in as “Credit” (earned grades of C or better) or “Substandard Credit” (earned grades of C- or D). Courses where no credit is earned do not transfer over.
Students interested in visiting another institution must submit a Transfer Credit Petition before applying and enrolling at the other institution. If approved, a letter of good standing (indicating permission to take courses) will be produced. (Do not request a separate letter of good standing.) It is the student’s responsibility to inquire with the other institution as to application procedures and deadlines, as well as arranging for an official transcript to be submitted to the Records Office once the courses are complete.
Enrollment at Boalt
Hastings students may take up to 8 units (of the 34 unit transfer credit maximum) at Boalt Hall through the Consortium Law Program for Inter-school Enrollment at a cost of $15 per course.
- Transfer Credit Petition
- BOALT Application
At the first class meeting, inform the instructor that you wish to take the class and obtain his/her signature approval on the UC Boalt form. Faculty approval does not guarantee your admission to the class.
*** To ensure your request is processed on time, please submit your petition and UC Boalt application no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of the next semester.
Enrollment at the University of San Francisco
JD students who are interested in taking a tax or other law school class at the University of San Francisco may do so at no cost (one class per semester) under a new Consortium Agreement with USF.
Restriction: Only classes not being offered at UC Hastings may be taken under this agreement. Courses are open to UC Hastings JD students on a space available basis. Many of the tax classes meet at the downtown USF campus, at 101 Howard Street.
- Transfer Credit Petition
- USF Consortium Form
Once approved by UC Hastings, bring the completed USF consortium form, along with your government-issued photo ID, to the USF Law Registrar office.
*** To ensure your request is processed on time, please submit your petition and USF consortium form no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of the next semester.
The Hastings Writing Requirement must be completed at Hastings, no exceptions.
Credits from a Non-Law Graduate Institution
Hastings students may also transfer up to 6 units (of the 34 unit transfer credit maximum) from non-law graduate coursework. Prior to enrollment, students interested in taking non-law graduate coursework must submit a Non-Law Transfer Credit Petition, as well as a copy of course description, to the Records Office for approval by the Academic Dean. If approved, the student may enroll in the course. Upon completion an official transcript must be submitted to the Records Office, for review.
For more specific limitations on joint degree credit, units earned at foreign law schools (including UC Hastings approved exchange and study abroad programs), and credit for distance education courses, see the Academic Regulations.
